Remember, remember, take care on bonfire night

Fireworks night is just around the corner and Somerset Council is reminding everyone, to stay safe, reduce waste and follow the advice of the fire service.

Fireworks night is a fun time of year, with parties and back garden displays of bright lights and rockets. It is important that residents take care, celebrate fireworks night safely, and reduce waste where possible.

It’s essential to follow the advice from the fire service and other experts and take these simple steps to help keep everyone safe:

  • Before putting fireworks in your rubbish, drench embers and soak used or part-spent fireworks in a bucket of water to prevent a fatal fire.
  • Never use a bonfire to burn waste – rubber, foam, plastics and paints will all release toxic gases when burning.
  • For a safe bonfire, stick to untreated wood, dry branches, and garden wastes, including leaves. Avoid adding wet garden materials as they will release more smoke.
  • Check the bonfire for hedgehogs or other creatures hiding within the pile.
  • Protect pets by warning local people about any fireworks or fire that could disturb animals.
  • Don’t set off sky lanterns because of the fire risk and danger to wildlife from the remains.
  • Misfired or partly spent fireworks must be soaked in water and the manufacturer or supplier contacted for disposal guidance.

As well as staying safe when celebrating, the council is urging households to use bonfire night to waste less.

Cllr Dixie Darch, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Climate and the Environment said:

“Bonfire night is a fun-filled spectacle but it’s important to know how to properly dispose of fireworks to prevent bin fires.

“The celebrations can also be the perfect opportunity to use up leftovers and waste less. Raid the fridge, freezer and cupboards to make great party food.

“Avoid single-use party plates and cups (even if they are recyclable), ask guests to bring along a reusable plate and cup.”

Wellington and Bridgwater recycling sites remain open 7 days a week

Somerset Council’s recycling sites in Wellington and Bridgwater will remain open seven days a week until Taunton Recycling Site can safely re-open.

Wellington is usually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but will open Monday to Sunday. Bridgwater usually closes on Wednesdays but is also open seven days a week.

Visitors are warned that Wellington is experiencing an influx of visitors on Wednesdays, the site’s previous first opening day of the week. If possible, Taunton visitors are asked to avoid this site and use Bridgwater Recycling Site instead, which is seeing fewer visitors on a Wednesday.

Teams from Taunton recycling site have been redeployed to help at Wellington and Bridgwater and will meet and greet visitors during busier periods.

The site in Priorswood, Taunton will remain closed until further notice.

At this stage, the cause of the blaze is not known and due to a small fire still smouldering it is uncertain of when the site can be reopened.

The site averages around 700 visitors a day and residents who would usually use it are asked to either:

  • Hold on to their recycling if it can wait
  • Put it in their kerbside recycling if it is the right kind of material
  • Try one of the council’s other 15 sites if it is waste that urgently needs to go

Local sites details can be found online: Find your nearest recycling centre.

Somerset Council has 16 recycling sites across the county which are managed by Biffa on the Council’s behalf. Staff from Taunton have been redeployed to provide the extra opening in Wellington and Bridgwater.

The building, where recycling is sorted for sending out to be reprocessed, is considered structurally unsafe.

Fire services were called to the site in Priorswood in the early hours of the morning on Tuesday 3 October and up to 60 firefighters and seven appliances were involved in tackling the blaze.

Recycling site remains closed as blaze continues

Residents are being reminded that Taunton Recycling Site will remain closed for the foreseeable future following the fire that began last Tuesday morning.

Wellington and Bridgwater recycling sites will continue to open seven days a week – supported by staff redeployed from Taunton – until the Taunton site can safely reopen.

Both Wellington and Bridgwater saw a large influx of visitors last weekend and advice is to save your visit until midweek if possible.

The Wellington site was particularly busy, so residents are advised to use the Bridgwater site if practical.

Kerbside collections are not affected by the closure and residents should continue to put their refuse and recycling out as usual.

The site is owned by Biffa who manage the public recycling site on behalf of Somerset Council. Although a small fire is still burning today, structural engineers were on site yesterday (10 October) and will take several days to conclude investigations.

The public recycling site cannot open until the Material Recovery Facility is made safe or demolished.

Residents who would usually use the Taunton site in the Priorswood area are asked to either:

  • Hold on to their recycling if it can wait
  • Put it in their kerbside recycling if it is the right kind of material
  • Try one of the council’s other 15 sites if it is waste that urgently needs to go

Cllr Dixie Darch, Executive Member for Climate, and the Environment said: “I want to thank residents for their patience and understanding. We are sorry that you cannot access the site yet.

“Teams are working hard to find the best way to make the site safe, but please bear with us while plans are put in place to reopen.”

Fire services were called to the site in Priorswood in the early hours of the morning on Tuesday 3 October and up to 60 firefighters and seven appliances were involved in tackling the blaze.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Somerset Council has 16 recycling sites across the county which are managed by Biffa on the Council’s behalf. Staff from Taunton have been redeployed to provide the extra opening in Wellington and Bridgwater.

Taunton Recycling Site closed today due to fire

Fire services were called to the site in Priorswood in the early hours of the morning. And up to 60 firefighters and seven appliances were involved in tackling the blaze.

The fire was not in the area of public access, but in the adjacent Materials Recovery Facility where recycling is sorted for sending out to be reprocessed.

At this stage the cause is not known. The site is managed by Biffa on behalf of Somerset Council.

Further information will be provided later today regarding the opening of the site and any other impacts.

In the meantime, residents are advised to delay any planned visits to the Priorswood site or consider alternatives. The details of other recycling sites and their opening hours can be found online: www.somerset.gov.uk/find-your-nearest-recycling-centre/

MET Office weather warning – Weds/Thurs

A Met Office weather warning of strong winds has been issued for Wednesday going into Thursday this week.

The low-pressure system (and associated windy weather) has been named Storm Agnes.

The Met Office has taken the decision to name this system due to the broad area of strong winds that are likely to cause some disruption from approx. 1200 on Wednesday 27th September until 0700 on Thursday 28th September.

Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected inland from south to south-westerly winds.

Exposed coasts and headlands could see gusts of 65 to 75 mph.

As well as the disruptive wind, there will be a band of heavy rain moving north-eastwards across the region during the afternoon and early evening on Wednesday. They are not expecting this to be too impactful, however.

As a result of the strong winds associated with Storm Agnes, you can expect a very slight chance of:

  • some flying debris
  • some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
  • power cuts
  • road, rail, air, and ferry services being affected
  • roads and bridges closing
  • large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads, and properties
  • some minor flooding of coastal roads
